Review of Sing Street (2016) by Ryan B — 18 Jun 2018
If you only see one musical this year, see Sing Street (sorry, La La Land). This unexpected indie musical (from the director of Once) is so charming and full of heart. Sing street is about a boy whose parents, in the beginning, stages of separation, have to make financial cutbacks which send him to a new school. After a chance encounter with an intriguing older girl, the boys decide to start a band.
Yes, Sing Street is technically a musical, but John Carney's way of telling a story through song is so natural that the music never seems forced on you, or separate from the story itself.
Other than the fact that I smile through the whole film (all 3 times I've seen it), Sing Street is just good. I don't mean good in that it has quality, I mean good in the way that means goodness. It displays a wholesomeness that is effortless and just fills me with joy.
