Review of Shame (2011) by Joyce Z — 16 Feb 2013
I think Hunger is the best film of the 2000's and this completely blew it out of the water. It has been interesting to see the focus on the performances, which are perfect, since all the elements of the film are weaved and integrated so deeply.
This makes it difficult to praise a single element without reference to all the others; I cannot praise Fassbender's acting without making reference to the direction, score, or camerawork that elevates and sustains the performance.
In addition, McQueen offers the audience much wiggle room for understanding and interpreting the picture despite everything being so tightly knit. This is definitely not something to recommend to everyone, but I may take that chance.
After all, you never know what someone may get out of it.
