Review of Searching (2018) by Dasha G — 18 Dec 2018
I did not expect the film to be so gripping. But it was. The actors' performance made up for the lack of action, and the story's multiple twists left me double-guessing myself. I think half of the film's success lies in its careful play with audience's expectations and genre conventions.
There were a few times in the film when I went "I KNEW IT! Of course, it was him/her/them." But I was wrong. The film was smart enough to play off my expectations, show some familiar archetypes, and then develop new twists.
The second half of the film's success has to do with the characters' development. I FELT for David Kim and his daughter. With hardly any narration, the film was able to set these beautiful complex characters and let them do their magic.
I can hardly believe that this is Aneesh Chaganty's directorial debut. I look forward to seeing more of his films.
