The first time I saw this film there wasn't any english subtitles, and my french is terrible, but I found myself laughing regardless. My girlfriend tracked down a copy with subtitles thankfully and when I watched it again I laughed twice as hard.
It's definitely stupid and nonsensical, but most of the best comedies are. Great performances all round and guffaw gags-a-plenty.
