Review of Route Irish (2011) by Jeff R — 20 Mar 2011
There are contracted soldiers in Iraq, hired by private companies. Sometimes they get missions similar to that of regular armed forces but aren't bound by regular armed forces rules.
Ken Loach is well known for furiously attacking social injustice in UK. Here he deals with British security business in Iraq. A taxi cab with two children is attacked and everyone inside it dies. Then the cover-up procedure starts, but this contracted soldier starts to find out the truth.
It's not a typical Ken Loach movie, it's more of a typical thriller, but Loach's agenda is clear. These soldiers kill and get killed not for patriotic or other reasons. It all happens because somebody wants to make money on the war.
A film filled with rage, which in the end maybe turns a little too much into a revenge drama. But there are lots of uncomfortable questions and answers here. We're getting less and less used to that.
