Review of Rock & Rule (1983) by Robert H — 09 Jun 2014
Bringing forth beautiful animation, brilliant music, and a "crossroads" tale for future generations, Rock & Rule is a triumph of Canadian animation.
Not as well known as the films from Disney or Ghibli, Nelvana produced some great pieces of animation. Perhaps you've heard of the Carebears, Tintin, Babar, Inspector Gadget, The Star Wars Holiday Special or perhaps even the Beatles film Yellow Submarine?
Nelvana would have gone bankrupt from making Rock & Rule as it completely flopped but thanks to their work in children's television (which the company continues to this date), Nelvana will be part of children's memories for generations.
Oddly, they had turned down the more well known and popular Heavy Metal in order to make this particular film. While different, the combination of music and animation set the films apart from everything else that was available even to this day.
