Review of Riding Alone for Thousands of Miles (2005) by Tiffany Z — 06 Jan 2008
I've often heard this described as one of Zhang Yimou's "lesser films." In terms of cinematography, and artistic shots, it can't even hold a match to "Hero." However, this film is something completely different.
It is a film about isolation... linguistic, cultural, physical, and emotional. In terms of honesty, it was on par with "To Live," and far surpassed "The Road Home." This film was not an epic gongfu movie.
.. Instead, it was very Asian, while at the same time still being universal. Watching this in China made it even more touching, as I could see people and behaviours that I know. I don't think I've cried this hard in a LONG time.
.. Bravo!
