Review of Return to Mayberry (1986) by Geoff C — 15 Jul 2012
This was a fun little reunion. It jumps the shark, a little bit with the plot. Barney Fife (who is running for Sheriff) is convinced that there is a sea monster loose in the town's lake. The monster is apparently guilty of stealing chickens.
Barney vows to use the full force of the Mayberry Sheriff's office to bring down the wicked beast. Meanwhile, level headed former sheriff Andy Taylor (Who is visiting Mayberry, with the initial intention to run for Sheriff until he discovers Barney is running) is skeptical about the monster theory, and believes there is a hoax at play.
This show does not quite teach any morality lessons, or touch the heart the way the old Griffith episodes did, but it is a fun little reunion. Basically, it was just an excuse to dust off Mayberry one last time, no matter how unnecessary it was.
