Review of Reds (1981) by Joe L — 01 Jun 2008
Warren Beatty's classic labor of love. He remains, for the most part, in line with the truth in his onscreen portrayal of the fast, adventurous times of John Reed's brief life and activism. Reed's constant political development, his insatiable zeal, his passion for the oppressed and hunger to capture a great moment and the conflict raging within him are all explored in painstaking detail, all through his intense symbiotic relationship with Louise Bryant.
Diane Keaton asserts her iron will as Louise and Jack Nicholson and Maureen Stapleton are outstanding as Eugene O'Neill and Emma Goldman, respectively. It is probably for the best that Reed died so young, before he could have lived long enough for hope to fade.
He represents the purity of an ideal.
