Review of Ran (1985) by Adam Z — 13 Oct 2009
Simply breathtaking, Kurosawa's perfect "Ran" is a brilliant retelling of Shakespeare's "King Lear" with gorgeous scenery, exquisite acting from lead Tatsuya Nakadai, and colors that reflect the emotional mood of the film.
The scene that hits me in the gut the most is the mad Emperor's castle being raided. As he slowly descends down the steps, his entire world falls apart in roaring flames and dying soldiers. No sound of screaming troops or the thumping of hooves.
Just haunting music. It truly is "ran"--the Japanese word for chaos.
