Review of Rain Man (1988) by Shane S — 24 Sep 2010
I would've loved this film a lot more if they didn't have to stick to archetypes, but hey - at least I learned (from dialogue and implied pieces of plot) that Raymond was institutionalized against his will. Such rigidity made him into that stereotype - that textbook example of autism (with all his rituals, fascinations, and not-so-unusual outbursts). Tom Cruise is still a profanity-spewing jerk like he was in "Risky Business" - the jerk who eventually has his heart unfrozen.
The cinematography in this film is, without a doubt, perfect. The score is amazing. The acting was reserved. The script is very decent - not the best, but makes up for its faults.
Plus, there's one good lesson to learn from this film: K-Mart sucks.
