Review of Potiche (1983) by Sam H — 18 Mar 2011
Has there ever been such an enduringly luminous presence in cinema as Catherine Deneuve? She sparkles as effortlessly in Potiche as she did 46 years ago in The Umbrellas of Cherbourg. Watching her is but one of the many pleasures of Potiche, a kitsch confection full of bright colours, funny dialogue and perfectly pitched performances by an ideal cast.
This is as good as anything Almodovar was doing in his camp 90s films. Francois Ozon has swung wildly from daring comedies to sobering dramas, but this is probably his most accessible and purely enjoyable film yet.
