Review of Point Blank (1967) by Steve S — 09 Aug 2008
The ultimate Lee Marvin badass picture. Did his character survive being double-crossed and shot and somehow swim from Alcatraz to shore? Is the film a dying dream? Or is Marvin's character Walker an undead revenant seeking vengeance? Who knows (and Boorman, in the very entertaining audio commentary on the DVD, will not tell you)?
The film is great however. Along with Marvin, the terrific cast is rounded out (pun Intended) by lovely Angie Dickenson (the sister of Walker's deceased wife and his love interest), John Vernon (this film established him as a villian), Carroll O'Conner (as a gangster), and Keenan Wynn as a mysterious man who backs Walker's quest for revenge for his own reasons. This was film noir updated to the swinging sixties and Boorman created a thriller which stands up very well today. Forget about the Mel Gibson remake PAYBACK.
Firearms trivia note: the revolver Marvin/Walker uses is the S&W .44 magnum; DIRTY HARRY was still four years away.
