Review of Poetry (2010) by Patrick P — 31 Jan 2011
Haunting. Lyrical. Vibrant. Lee Chang-dong's powerful tale of an elderly woman dealing with hardship through poetry is a completely profound cinematic experience. Yun Jung-hee is heartbreaking as a woman on the cusp of Alzheimer's who discovers that her grandson has committed an unthinkable crime.
Reminiscent of MOTHER, minus the thriller elements, POETRY is a masterful evocation of a free spirit torn down by the fog of age and tragedy whose search for poetic inspiration leads to an unlikely and heartbreaking source.
This is great and unforgettable filmmaking.
