Review of Petulia (1968) by Matthew T — 24 Jun 2008
Saw this on the big screen at the Castro theatre a month ago (which was about 80% full) and it works incredibly well. There's so much to say about this exceptional film. A few remarks. Julie Christie at the height of her powers, never more beautiful, trying to save the newly-divorced (and shutting down) Scott is a unique portrayal of compassion and salvation.
John Barry's score is gorgeous, as is the top-flight cinematography and production design. At the end, of some metaphorical signifiance is that, set in the Summer of Love, it knowingly details that love does not conquer all, nor is it all you need.
Favorite dialogue, near the film's end (Petulia, to Archie); "We were barely more than a one night stand. We didn't even give each other a cold. Did I change you Archie?" (Archie). "Yes, you turned me into a kook.
" One of a kind: they broke the mold after this one--- a mature heartbreaker.
