Review of Performance (1970) by James G — 25 Aug 2007
Mind-blowing, transgressive psychodrama. Takes quite a few heavy themes - masculinity, feminity, sexuality, aggression, violence, artifice, madness - and brings them together in pressurised, claustrophobic and druggy environment.
James Fox is amazing as the fastidious, slightly unhinged gangster. The soundtrack is incredible, a diverse mix of interesting and unusual artists (a rocking Randy Newman, Merry Clayton, Buffy Sainte Marie, The Last Poets) and some early experimental synthesiser noise.
