Review of People, Places, Things (2015) by Sophie . — 10 Sep 2015
It really is a funny film, and I laughed quite a lot. The humor in this film is smart and poignant, and Jemaine Clement plays the protagonist with sass and charm. I just wish the characters in the film were more sympathetic, and not such fuck-ups (perhaps it has something to do with my age.
Maybe I'll be fond of these characters as I get older). We are all confused in our lives, trapped in a perpetual state of confusion, and so are these people in the film; but I didn't want the movie to remind me of that messy aspect of life.
I wanted to root for these people, not get annoyed by their behavior. The script by Strouse is well-written and the score is heartwarming, People Places Things explores the familiar narrative territory, but overall it's funny and not without charm.
