Review of Paprika (2006) by Bjørn R — 21 Nov 2008
Had to watch it again, immediatly. Yes: its weird, and yes: its great! We are in the domain of dreams, and the movie obeys with its many symbols and special dream logic. Different people turns out to be aspects of the same person, am I dreaming or am I awake? Am I dreaming or are this a repetition? and what is fiction? and internet? like.. dreamy? And lots of dualism, yes! And that melody... My girlfriend dreamed that her dream was being sucked into the great crazy collective dream when a poster fell into her head the night after watching the movie. I was prepared for nightmares too - but, well, we are a bit sensitive.
Other great stuff on the border of reality: Naked Lunch, The Matrix, The Science of Sleep, Fight Club, Executive Koala (also japanese), Altered States, Lawnmoover man, The Sandman (graphic novels).
Another proof of twisted japanese imagination is the fantastic game "Katamari Damacy" for Playstation 2.
