Review of Other People (2016) by Tatsuhito K — 07 Oct 2016
There are a lot of moments in "Other People" that will tug your heartstrings. Some of them are genuinely effective, others feel too sentimental. There are also some funny moments in it, but I must say it is not as hilarious as people make it to be.
Perhaps it was to do with my expectation; having heard that it was the opening film of this year's Sundance Film Festival and received very positive reviews, I wanted this film to break me emotionally.
I love the central story here and both Plemons and Shannon are terrific (Shannon deserves some sort of awards for this role. She is just excellent!), but some of the subplots and supporting characters surrounding this story feel forced and unnecessary, and that is my biggest problem with the film.
Overall, it is a competently made film with two really good performances.
