Review of Opening Night (1977) by Mathieu C — 09 Sep 2007
One of the many things I love most about this film is that it doesn't define the self destructive character of Myrtle to the point where we know exactly why she is how she is. What we know is what she tells other people, we certainly see more but what we see she does tell other people.
What she does only really makes sense to her, and even then probably only vaguely. We also get a very good idea of what it is like to have the regular pressures of putting on a play. Essentially that is all there is to the film, but Cassavetes takes us through every emotion these characters go through that we feel like not one moment of this film is wasted.
