Review of Only God Forgives (2013) by Cole S — 12 Dec 2018
Winding Refn is a few things, he is a Director who specialises in high-concept idea films and he is a Director of Arthouse aimed films. With 'Drive' he somehow found himself in mainstream acceptance and I think it's because of that and with Gosling's involvement in this film that 'Only God Forgives' was so poorly received.
It's certainly Marmite cinema and I've been the first to admit that Refn's ideas don't always work, but at times I found this film breathtaking and the sense of unease and tension throughout is incredible.
It has beautiful camerawork, it has deep philosophical ideas (yeah some of them are pretentious, fine by me) and it has some shattering visceral violence. It's a film like no other, I really loved it.
