Review of Nil by Mouth (1997) by Rohan M — 04 Dec 2007
Astonishing film. It's very rare to see such honest and beautiful performances. Kathy Burke is just hearbreaking as the woman who 'puts up with' domestic violence. It's a performance that doesn't judge and is all the more extraordinary for that.
Ray Winstone too is magnificent; his trembling impotence as he brutalizes his wife is so true. Anyone who has ever witnessed the violence that alcoholism can bring will testify to it. My favourite moment? When Winstone orders his little girl to go back to her room after she has witnessed the violence and she silently obeys. Heartbreaking.
