Honestly, I would have given this 4 stars were it not for the absurdly abrupt and unsatisfying ending. Until the last moment it manages to steer between the usual cliches to create something genuinely gripping and honest.
But once that title rushes up from the black, signalling the end, and you realise that, nope, the gay plot gets no resolution, and, nope, the competition gets no resolution - well, it feels a cheat. It seems like an ending on paper that sparkles with poetry but fails to translate effectively to a finishing point on film.
Pity. Because other than that the movie is brill.
