Review of Newcastle (2008) by Hannah W — 29 Jul 2011
I grew up as a surfing teenager in Newcastle so I thought this film would be of interest. Ironically I thought it was the surfing that got in the way of the plot which was meagre at best. I thought it was well acted but there was way to much angst going on, particularly in the lead character Jesse. Friendships were strained for most of the film and I didn't really care about anyone apart from Fergus whose gay storyline went nowhere anyway. It was great however to see Shane Jacobson in a dramatic role which was refreshing.
It did appear that this film was aimed at the teenage girl market with way too many nudey men running around. The skinny dipping scene with the brothers in particular was a good point to make a cuppa.
And what happened in the end? It was almost as if the camera batteries died so they called it a day.
The star of this film is Newcastle itself which really shines as it should. It's a pity the story didn't match up.
