Review of My Son, My Son, What Have Ye Done (2010) by Kenneth B — 23 Nov 2011
I am a little bit surprised at the mixed reviews for this one. Herzog and Lynch clearly aren't a broad appeal, and I'm certain that this didn't receive a wide enough release to reach those who are outside of their respective fan-bases. Herzog has the main director credit and to me it is decidedly more Herzogian than Lynchian, in fact it feels specifically similar in mood to Heart of Glass.
Although dark and with tough subject matter, it has the subversive, almost deadpan humour that seems to seep from Herzog's work and although it is clearly absurd at times Herzog knows how to make it function. There are moments of genius and for me the most memorable parts are the ones that made me laugh, which were in fact made so effective by Shannon who is excellent in the lead role.
I was hoping that I would not be disappointed by this film, on the contrary, my expectations were exceeded, so much so that I have been torn between 4 and 4.5 stars.
