Review of My Best Friend's Birthday (1987) by Paul Z — 19 Jul 2008
Amateurish, But Shows Mucho Talent. After having wondered about this lost film for years I finally saw it on the internet in 4 parts. The final part is the best and was basically duplicated by Christian Slater and Patricia Arquette in the first act of True Romance.
It's very interesting watching the seeds of Tarantino's universe starting to sprout here. I remember reading that when he was trying to get 'Reservoir Dogs' made, he was advised not to show the film to anyone for fear that it would sabotage his attempts to direct that film.
However, someone with talent would have seen the talent in this unfinished film. An idiot would miss it, and because most producers are idiots, it was a wise move not to show it. It is very amateurishly shot and some of the acting is atrociously bad, but the writing is fantastic.
See it if you can and stick with it till the end to see what I mean.
