Review of Mutual Appreciation (2005) by Gavin L — 21 Mar 2007
One of the best indie films I have seen in the last year or so, this was pretty much hand made by a guy along with a few friends. It has the flavour of a Cassavetes film but with a less hysterical approach, this is more low-key and laid back and deals with the kind of issues that we all face in our lives, the tiny things, the minor moments, the small situations, the issues that show us who we really are, and not the usual lies that get told about people in films.
Bujalski's film is a comforting world, which reflects the dead time that makes up our mundane existance, and creates a more engaging kind of cinema because of it. Unpretensious and shot in a matter of fact style, it has repsect for what's going on in front of the camera and doesn't try to distract the viewer with phoney camera movement and flashy editing, which from this viewer's perspective was much appreciated.
Subtle!
