Review of Mr. Death: The Rise and Fall of Fred A. Leuchter, Jr. (1999) by Jh F — 03 Mar 2006
An amazing character study of a deeply misguided character. Leuchter comes off as a chump, a fall boy for Zundel and his fellow neo-nazi revisionists. Morris works here as an arch editor, juxtaposing Leuchter with often absurd clips while Leuchter, ever straight-laced, carries on with his often chillingly calm explanations of his former jobs.
Interviews with various personalities on both sides of the controversy are also both given their view on Leuchter. These include a vitriolic David Irving who hails Leuchter as a 'hero'.
A shock of a documentary that takes your sympathies for a ride, shuttling you from a sympathetic view of Leuchter as a slightly odd, fringe character to that of a monster back to pathetic and misguided character, that Morris feels he is by the end.
