The vampirism actually takes more of a back seat in this; it's just an added bonus that Hyde stays young and pretty through out the course of the film. It mostly focuses on the friendship aspect of the characters.
Although the gun shoot-offs were giggle worthy in their unrealisticness, it's fairly easy to will one's suspension-of-disbelief, and simply enjoy the movie.
