Review of Miss Bala (2011) by Phil N — 22 Feb 2012
Laura (Stephanie Sigman) dreams of being a beauty queen but her world is turned upside down after she and her friend Suzu are caught up in a shootout in a club. Laura escapes but is captured by gang leader Lino who wants to use her as their errand girl.
Don't be fooled by the trailer, Miss Bala is no vacant action vessel like Colombiana, it's a much more thoughtful drama showing the fate of a young woman caught up in the Mexican drug trade whilst trying to follow her dreams.
Sigman is excellent, displaying a calm steely determination despite the obvious fear that the situation provokes.
