Review of MirrorMask (2005) by Gidi K — 18 Jan 2009
I love this kind of story! A complex dreamworld like in Alice through the Looking Glass and Labyrinth, but with a point. A tour-de-force performance by Stephanie Leonidas as a teenage girl who is wise beyond her years but a teenage girl non the less. Events in her life make her having to grow up sooner than she'd like. So this is basically a coming of age story in a land were shadows turn into spiders, windows are actually mirrors and she must find a charm to help wake up the white queen though she doesn't know what it looks like. It takes a while to get this film, but when you suddenly do, this is really great.
I had heard a lot about the film as being the film that made Stephanie Leonidas famous, but I still didn't know what to expect. I had seen her in other things and was already a fan, but I understand how this put her on the map. Seeing her talent in a lead role is just staggering.
