Review of Memoirs of a Geisha (2005) by Colby F — 15 Aug 2010
An intensely beautiful story. Chio's transformation from the innocent, timid little girl to the complex woman she becomes is interesting to watch. Her struggles are somewhat depressing, yet she always manages to keep a smile on her face.
Her determination and a hope for a brighter future is the only thing that keeps her alive. It is also interesting to see her slowly become the one person she disliked the most: Hatsumomo, her competition.
The film is excellent because of this, because we see an honorable character slowly, unwillingly turn into something sad. Maybe it was her lack of freedom. Maybe it was the occupation. It only adds another layer of depth to the entire film, with it's gorgeous locales and its excellent film score.
A perfect movie.
