Review of Martyrs (2015) by Nicholas C — 28 Mar 2016

I decided to watch this movie to compare it to the French version, my all time favorite horror movie. I knew the American version was going to be bad, but I didn't think it could be THIS bad. Everything good about the original was either missing or tarnished in this new one.

Disturbing makeup, gore, death/ torture scenes? Watered down in this one to be suitable for a PG13 audience. Complex dynamic between characters Lucy and Anna (including some sexual tension and threats of betrayal) made into a dull, average friendship in the American one.

Philosophical question begging, causing the watcher to come to his/her own conclusions from the subtext of dialogue, body language, and actions? In the new movie, everything is spelled out for you like you're an unthinking set of eyes.

Horrible, horrible, horrible. Watch the original, it's easily one of the greatest modern horror movies. This one is downright insulting to your intelligence.
