Review of Marnie (1964) by Lane W — 19 Dec 2008
WONDERFUL. Definitely one of my favorite Hitchcock films. Hedren is thrilling to watch, and her icy, cold demeanor perfectly contrasts the warmth coming from Connery. And what warmth it is. Connery oozes sex and charm, and any self respecting woman would have gone limp in his arms, which is a testament to the strength of Hedren's performance.
Their sexual chemistry is unparalleled, and Hitch's build up is masterful. There is beautiful camera work, as is typical with Hitchcock films - specifically when Marnie is robbing Rutland's and the janitor is mopping right beside her.
The climax and denouement are heart-pounding and shatter the preconceptions put in place by the rest of the film. Absolute perfection.
