Review of Marketa Lazarová (1967) by David M — 30 May 2008
This actually has a fairly straightforward and well-constructed narrative, although the film is so dense with its devices - flashbacks, flashforwards, cross-cuts, montages, ellipses, bits of sixties editing jiggery-pokery - that it took me two viewings to tease it out.
I'm not sure that's a positive, but the striking imagery and brutal, elemental, hand-to-mouth medieval atmosphere certainly are.
Intelligent, eccentric, and - yes - a bit difficult.
