Review of Madame Satã (2002) by - Rute 8 — 10 Jun 2009
I watch a lot of Brazilian movies. When I was 21 I lived in Salvador for 10 months and then traveled to Belo Horizonte Victoria Rio Sao Paulo then on the La Paz Bolivia by train from Sao Paulo. I like this film better than Ebert and some other reviewers.
The main character is really a rather despicable character. If you are not familiar with some of the underbelly of big cities-slums queens prostitutes drugs squalor drag transsexuals homosexuality nocturnal criminal activity by choice -this film might offend you.
Parts of it are very graphic. however even though the main character is a horrible creature I still liked and admired the film as it goes in to places scenes areas that few films dare to go. It is amazing that this is Karim Ainouz first feature film.
It is very impressive. Other reviewer " drag queen becomes martyr" and then a Brazilian popular cultural icon. I think it is still a very compelling film Watch this at your own risk!! four stars.
