Review of Letters from Iwo Jima (2006) by Don S — 11 Apr 2012
Right on the heels of "Flags of our Fathers," Clint Eastwood directs this companion piece chronicling the Japanese point of view on the battle of Iwo Jima. Unlike "Flags of our Fathers," which was dull and unsympathetic, this film was a tragic look at Japanese military mentality, how these men were trained to accept death in battle as the greatest honor one could ever achieve, truly touching and beautiful, this film is a masterpiece.
Based on actual letters from Japanese soldiers that were unearthed in 2005 in an archaeological expedition on the island, "Letters from Iwo Jima" truly is the better of the two films.
