Review of Leningrad Cowboys Go America (1989) by Tibor B — 29 Feb 2008
Very funny, absurd road movie following a quasi-Russian folk/polka band with 2 foot quiffs adapt their style to rock and roll while journeying south through America to Mexico to play at a wedding. The characters in the Leningrad Cowboys band never become more than cartoonish caricatures, and unlike, say, Spinal Tap there's not much genuine sympathy or compassion to be had as the band hit the US dive bars with their selfish manager, and followed by their village idiot one-man fan club.
Ironically the Cowboys are a pretty decent rock band, and Kaurismaki includes some enjoyable performances amidst the absurd comedy and industrial US road movie scenery.
