Review of Leaving Las Vegas (1995) by Brian R — 24 Feb 2010
I didn't think much of Nicholas Cage because of all the films he was doing recently such as Ghost Rider and National Treasure, which I haven't seen, but never really grabbed me.
But then when I saw Face/Off I was blown away by his acting ability, so I checked out his older films and when I saw Leaving Las Vegas that was the final sweetner for me.
A very dark, raw and black humoured film. But what I think gave this film life was how realistic it was, such as hookers being treated terribly and men drinking themselves to death happens more than one man taking on thousands of soldiers, reference to all one-man-army films.
Fantastic soundtrack, with many great scenes (Opening scene) and quotes and to top it off, absolutely outstanding performances from the two leads, Cage definatly deserved best actor for his depressing funny drunk. Leaving Las Vegas is one film that will stick out in my mind.
5/5.
