Review of Last Flag Flying (2017) by David T — 08 Nov 2017
So, just caught this film in a pre-release screening. If you're a Linklater fan like myself you know what you are in for regarding pacing and dialogue. Linklater pushes dramatic revelations through dialogue.
The old adage of show don't tell has never applied to Linklater. Although because of this, many disregard his films as too arthouse. I really liked this film. After watching Carell as Michael in the office for 10 years, you come to expect his character to be larger than life, although in this film he plays it subtle and it comes off as honest and believable.
The true force of nature in this film is Cranston. He does all of the heavy lifting and keeps the audience engaged. I also really liked how these older men slowly re-kindle the friendship they once had 30 years earlier.
This film is a sleeper.... although I mean that in the best of ways-.
