Review of Lassie (1994) by Caroline W — 23 Jun 2009
Having grown up with tv tales of lassie in contemporary america saving boys who stupidly fell down mineshafts it took me by surprise to find this was set during wartime england. having done my research I found out this was when the story was originally set and it makes for a great backdrop to a familiar story.
ok so it ticks all the british and/or animal film boxes but then it was one of the stories that set the benchmakr for such tales anyway. where this film really wins is in it's beatiful scenery and touching perfomances.
the two child leads, are endearing rather than annoying, and the animals are soo cute. especially toots. if this doesn't move you even slightly by the end then that's a cold heart indeed :).
