The tragedy of the Spanish civil war seen through the eyes of a British Communist idealist. A subject always close to my heart. Where were the champions of democracy then? As the fim progresses the ideals start to unravel until all that is left is a suitcase of memories and a handful of earth.
 Incredibly powerful. One of Ken Loach's best films. We are all still fighting for the same things.  .
