Review of Kung Fu Hustle (2004) by Nick G — 21 Feb 2010
Probably my favorite kung fu movie since it came out. It's got good humor mixed with all kinds of ass-kicking action. Between huge three-on-hundreds fights and the epic final battle between The One and the number one killer in the world, there's enough fight scenes to satisfy even me. Add to that the cast of creative and changing characters and you've got an awesome movie.
I also like the fact that the opening fight and the closing fight barely have anything to do with the overall conflict of the movie. The film opens with a guy who dies minutes later beating up a guy you never see again. It ends with the only occasionally seen comic relief versus a hired killer who didn't even appear in the movie until the last quarter (and was only mentioned once before that). Normally this would be a bad thing. But somehow, here? Genius.
