Review of Kids Return (1996) by Alexander W — 28 Feb 2012
A coming-of-age tale with quiet poignancy, delicate pacing and careful storytelling. It examines the inevitability of rifts in relationships as time passes, told through the friendship of two underachievers who slowly drift towards different lifestyles.
Takeshi Kitano is a masterful filmmaker. This is not one of his best films, but it is perfectly fitting of his oeuvre. Nostalgia and regret in balanced mix. I love the ending.
