Review of Katalin Varga (2009) by Grayson D — 04 Mar 2010
Unsettling and eerie debut by an English director but filmed in Transylvania and in the Romanian language. The Carpathian mountains make a beautiful and gloomy back drop to this revenge story. The original score is one of the best I have heard in a long time and is tremendously creepy.
Stylistically it is reminiscent of the films of Bela Tarr, Tarkovsky and early Werner Herzog. Hilda Peter is brilliant in the central role.
