Review of Jojo Rabbit (2019) by Skobb — 31 Jan 2020
I wanted to like this movie, but... I just couldn't. My wife got me to go by saying to me "Well, you liked 'The Producers'." As I told her when we left the theater: The Mel Brooks film was absurd all the way through.
For example, Mel never slipped into moments of seriousness when you actually felt sorry for the fraud that was perpetrated on those little old ladies (which, in real life, is not funny at all). In "Jo Jo", we're whipsawed back and forth between absurdist and quasi-realistic viewpoints.
That just didn't work for me, even though several of the performances were quite good.
