Set during the Rape of Nanking, this tells the story of an assorted group of Westerners trying, against all the odds, to save Chinese civilians during the massacres carried out by Japan in 1937, during the Sino-Japanese War.
Chosen, because he is a a member of the Nazi party which has influence with Japan, John Rabe leads the creation of a safety zone within Nanking, which eventually has 200,000 Chinese sheltering in it.
