Review of Jesus Christ Superstar (1973) by Ken P — 07 Apr 2018
This movie is a touchstone of my youth. My friends and I went to see this at LEAST 35 times in 1973 at the dollar cinema. It was magical and mysterious at 15, and now I don't find it any less compelling. (Never mind it's such a hippie thing, that was my time. Still love it, while chuckling.) Watching it again the other night, I saw something I'd never seen before - showing how bad the projection system was at the dollar cinema. I saw the shepherd and his flock, barely perceptible, walking across the bottom of the ending show - the cross against a brilliant sunset. Apparently it's always been there and we NEVER saw it. It makes it even more special.
If you're younger than us old folks, just look at as a sign of the times. And Andrew Lloyd Weber went on to write some of the greatest musicals of all time. Take a look at one of his earliest works.
