Review of Into the Woods (2014) by Smaher — 29 Dec 2014

I'm a big fan of this musical. I saw the original production on Broadway years ago and have never forgotten it. So I had my fingers crossed for the film. It didn't disappoint! The performances were strong throughout both dramatically and vocally.

Yes, it takes a dark turn in the second act, but that's the point. Life is not a fairy tale and there is no happily ever after. For some, they seem to think the life goes out of the piece at that point.

For me, that is what gives this play its substance. I thought the feature time worked. Some of the more dramatic moments may have felt a little rushed, but for today's attention challenged audiences, I can live with the compromise.
