Review of Imaginary Heroes (2004) by Erno K — 23 Jan 2009
(5 stars out of 5) This is one of my favorite independent films of all time. Sigourney Weaver plays the best fag hag mom ever and Emile Hirsch nails the part of her son, the quiet wallflower loner you can't help but want to hug.
The story follows a family as they all find their ways of coping with the suicide of the eldest teenage son. It's both a black comedy and a very real, very serious drama. I've seen it about 10 times and it still makes me cry--even knowing all the twists the plot has to offer.
And there are a few right down to the last scene. Although poignant, sad and scorchingly raw--there is also hope, humor and sentiment at the heart of this story.
